About food & beverages in Europe
In the European Union, food labelling follows Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011: ingredients in descending order by weight, a nutrition declaration, and 14 allergens emphasised within the ingredient list. Additives appear by name or E number together with their function, and each one is authorised only after an EFSA assessment. Products appear here as TrustPick users scan them.
The EU is often the strictest of the four markets TrustPick compares. Titanium dioxide (E171), for example, has been banned as a food additive since 2022 but is still permitted by the US FDA, so imported products can be flagged here that wouldn’t be elsewhere.
Every product page lists the ingredients in label order, nutrition per 100 g (and per serving where the label gives one), and, once a product has been analysed, how each ingredient is treated by regulators in India, the EU, the US and Canada.
Worth checking on the label
- Sugar, sodium and saturated fat per 100 g, which makes products of different pack sizes comparable
- Additives by name or code (INS / E numbers), and whether any carry limits or warnings somewhere
- Allergens, which are often inside compound ingredients in brackets
