About cosmetics & personal care in the United States
In the United States cosmetics are regulated by the FDA under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, with oversight expanded by the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022. Ingredients are listed in descending order of predominance, colour additives must be FDA-approved, and fragrance can appear as a single word. Products here are added as TrustPick users scan them.
The FDA’s list of prohibited and restricted cosmetic ingredients runs to about a dozen entries, against well over a thousand in the EU, so a product sold legally in the US may not be sold unchanged in Europe.
Each product page lists the full ingredient list as printed, and, once analysed, each ingredient’s status under the cosmetic rules of India, the EU, the US and Canada, with the reason for anything flagged.
Worth checking on the label
- Fragrance and preservatives, the usual triggers for sensitive skin
- Ingredients that are restricted to certain concentrations or product types (rinse-off versus leave-on)
- Colourants and UV filters, which are approved ingredient by ingredient
